RE: 2012 Hudson Bend Summer Reading Program for rising 7th and 8th grade students | |
I could not be more excited to announce that Hudson Bend has a new, wonderful summer reading program. Teachers at each grade level have chosen a book as required reading to offer students a wide variety of selections to read over the summer. Students will be able to interact with the teacher and/or collaborate with other students over the summer, or will have an assignment to do over the required reading when classes resume in the fall. In order to grow our summer reading into a more engaging program, we have made a few changes. This summer, Hudson Bend Middle School, is asking every student to read at least one book (one Book Club book) in our Academic classes and at least two books (one required book and one Book Club book) in our PreAp classes. We know that most of our students will read more! We believe that reading is an essential part of a quality education. Summer reading enables students to continue to be active readers, and it contributes to thoughtful writing. | |
The Hudson Bend Middle School Reading Program is voluntary, but we hope each student participates over the summer. Students who choose NOT to participate in the summer program will be given a reading assignment during the first 3 weeks of the new school year, along with an assignment that assesses their understanding and comprehension of the book they read. | |
The exciting part of the new Summer Reading Program is that we have a broad selection of books for students to read and alternative ways for students to show their comprehension of the material they have read. There will be low-tech ways to interact and discuss the book that was read, for example students may be asked to attend one or more meetings to discuss their book during the summer. Students may choose a high-tech method of checking in through an interactive group discussion on mybigcampus.com. Students may also choose a creative method of book interaction by choosing a book that has students creating a portfolio of book-related projects. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the HBMS Summer Reading Program is the teacher involvement in the program. We have 20 teachers participating as book mentors and sponsoring 19 different books! We are kicking off the HBMS Summer Reading Program with a special Book Club Fair during Structured Tutorial Time (STT) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012. Students will be presented with the reading choices on Monday, May 7. Then on Wednesday, May 9th, the students can go and meet three of the books sponsors to hear more about the books they are interested in and the interactive components associated with them. Parents, we encourage you to be involved with this program as well! We will be posting detailed information on the HBMS Summer Reading Project webpage which can be accessed through the HBMS homepage beginning Monday, May 7, 2012. Summer reading books can be purchased online or at local bookstores. Some books may also be available in our local libraries.
