A native Texan, I spent my childhood in Friendswood where I realized at an early age I deeply loved caring for children. After graduating from Midway High School, I moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas and pursued a career in education. During my senior year, I completed my student teaching at Widen Elementary and knew wholeheartedly that working with children was both a calling and my passion.
I was hired as a teacher at O. Henry Middle School, a school with a very diverse population at the time, and soon began graduate school. I obtained my master's degree from the University of Texas and then completed my administrator certification. My principal recruited me to become the assistant principal, and I later served as interim principal following her departure.
In November of 1999, I was bestowed the principalship of a brand new school, Dennis E. Cowan Elementary. I was honored during my first year as principal with the 2000-2001 Capital Area Counseling Association's Principal of the Year award. I am very proud of what I accomplished during my 12-plus years as the school's principal . These include, but are not limited to the following: focusing every decision I make on what's best for my students, high test scores, a reputation for recruiting excellence, an extremely low staff turn-over rate, a "Best Kept Secret in Austin" nickname, high-quality staff development, a phenomenal inclusion program, and a life-long friendship with the family of the administrator for whom the school was named.
During my departing ceremony from the school, it was announced that a scholarship for high school graduates would be bestowed annually in my name. The "April Glenn Cowan Elementary Endowment Fund" was a beautiful tribute to memorialize the enduring, positive relationships that I had the honor of building and maintaining during my time as principal there.
On a personal note, I am a wife and mother of three children, two of which are fraternal twins. I thoroughly enjoyed my first 20 years in education in Austin. After several years of living in Lakeway, I am eager to serve my neighbors in the Lake Travis Independent School District for the next part of my career.
